This is a old wedding apron made by an Ndebele woman. It is densely beaded with fine old glass beads onto leather of antelope or goat skin. The five fingered tabs hanging from the apron represent the 5 head of cattle that is paid by the groom to the bride's father for lobolo or bride price. The design is of a house. I saw this apron in the wonderful Phanzi Museum in Durban, South Africa. It's filled with traditional ceremonial costumes and daily wear of various tribal groups in S.A. We'll be visiting the Phanzi Museum on our Tour of South Africa in April, 2011.
