Newsflash
I came across this charming Zulu doll in an art gallery in South Africa. It's 4 ft. high and in accurate traditional dress of a rural Zulu married woman, known as a Makorti. Zulu married women wear a magnificent red hat. Various districts have slight variations in the cape they wear or decorations on their hats and skirts. This traditional skirt is thick, pleated cowhide, worn for special occasions.
This doll was made by the wonderful doll making group known as Siyazama. I visited one of the doll makers in her rural home and bought one of her dolls. You can learn more about this group at the link at the top called Who Are the Makers and find their dolls under the Traditional Dolls link on the right hand side.
